DEAR PQI6004 : WEEK 2: PRESENTATION, DEFINITION 3

Throughout my journey as student, I have never wondered who create the curriculum, even the term ‘curriculum’ seem unfamiliar to me. After sixteen years of study, after I enrolled in this postgraduate diploma of education, then I learn what the meaning behind ‘curriculum’ is. This ten-letter-word seem to hold a very abstract and big meaning in education.

Theoretically, curriculum itself have 6 definition. Last week, my group was responsible to present the third definition of curriculum that defined curriculum is

'all planned learnings for which the school is responsible.'

Malaysia’s school followed this definition as all schools in Malaysia are using the same syllabus and curriculum according to the Malaysia Ministry of Education (MOE). Once, when Malaysia MOE changed the syllabus from Bahasa Melayu to English and vice versa, all the schools in Malaysia just followed the instruction without any objection.

Giat MARA is an example of institution that hold responsible of arranging their syllabus according to their student ability. However, the core of its curriculum is still the on that are created by KPM.

Essentially, Singapore, and New Zealand also created their curriculum according to this definition. All the schools in these country followed the curriculum that has been made by the authority. In contrary, Australian education is different based on their state, for instance Southern Australian and Northern Australia has different curriculum.
