WEEK 6: DIFFERENT MODELS OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

It has been the 6^th week of my DPP study, and I’m starting to understand every subjects that I have learn including you, PQI6004. In today class, Dr. Dorothy discussed the answer to the previous assignment. Out of 100, I get a 75%. Thank you Dr. Dorothy for assessing and evaluate my answer. Overall, Dr Dorothy said that my answer was good and I have considered the learner’s analysis. From her comment, perhaps, I think I have captured the main points of the Analysis phase in A.D.D.I.E. Model.

After discussing the answer with the whole class, Dr. Dorothy continued the lessons with the Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction. In this context, Dr. Dorothy taught us on how to create a lesson plan based on this model.

In my opinion, Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction is a very complete model. It really does considered teacher’s preparation before, during and after class. Creating a lesson plan according to this model would produce a very complete lesson plan.

After discussing this model, Dr Dorothy divided us into 5 groups. Every group need to compare the given instructional design model with A.D.D.I.E. model and state at which part in the given model resembled the A.D.D.I.E. model. The given instructional model are ASSURE model, Dick and Carey model, Gerlach and Ely model, Kemp Design model and Kirkpatrick model.

Previously, I have introduced to you guys the A.D.D.I.E. model, one of the instructional design (ID) in curriculum. Well, A.D.D.I.E. is not the only model in ID. There are several models that can be used to design curriculum such as the ASSURE model, Dick and Carrey Model, Gerlach & Ely Model, Kemp Design Model and Kirkpatrick Model.

A.S.S.U.R.E. Model

Generally, ADDIE Model itself is included in the ASSURE Model, as shown below.

The yellow-colored box is the ADDIE model that is included in the ASSURE model. Analyze learners in ASSURE is a part of the Analysis phase in ADDIE. Similarly, the state objective and select media and materials are part of the design and development phase in ADDIE. The implementation phase of ADDIE is included in the utilize media and materials and require learner participation of ASSURE. Last but not least, the evaluation phase of ADDIE resembled the evaluate and revise phase in ASSURE.

Dick and Carey Model

Dick and Carey model also composed of the 5 important steps listed in ADDIE model. As shown in the figure above, the pink box indicates the Analysis phase of ADDIE while the BLUE box indicates the Design and Development phase.

Gerlach and Ely Model

The (1) and (2) phases are included in the Analysis phase. The (3)-(8) phases are included in Design and Development phase while (9) – (10) phases are Implement and Evaluation phase. 

Kemp Design Model

Kemp Design Model represents an innovative approach to instructional design by virtue of its non-linear structure, and interrelated nature of its components. However, its components are closely related to the ADDIE Model. For instance the instructional problems, learner characteristics, task analysis and instructional objectives are a part of the ADDIE’s Analysis phase. In addition, the Design phase of ADDIE is a part of the designing the message, instructional strategies and content sequencing components of the Kemp Design Model. The development of instruction is a part of the develop phase in ADDIE while the implementation component in Kemp model resembled the implement stage in ADDIE. The evaluation instruments components, formative evaluation and summative evaluation are a part of the evaluation phase in ADDIE Model.

Kirkpatrick Model: Four Levels of Learning Evaluation

The Kirkpatrick model is the best known model for analysing and evaluating the results of training and educational program. Different from other models, Kirkpatrick model focused only on the Evaluation phase of ADDIE Model. This model consist of 4 levels which are (1)reaction, (2)learning, (3)behaviour and (4)result. Reaction phase measures how learners reacts to a lesson. Next, the Learning phase analyses whether learners understood the lesson while the behaviour phase emphasized on whether learners utilizing what they learned at work. Lastly, the results level determine whether the materials used has a positive effect on the organization.

As we have compared all the model, it showed that ADDIE Model is the most powerful model as it was included in every kind of model. Therefore, in my opinion, ADDIE Model is one of the must-know model in designing curriculum as it is the basic model to design curriculum. 

Before ending the class, Dr. Dorothy had said that she will post an online assignment during the mid-term break. The assignment will require us to create a lesson plan according to Gagne’s 9 Instruction. Well, since the assignment will be due on Friday, I would have plenty of time to enjoy my holiday before handing in the assignment on Friday.
