WEEK 5: HOW TO TEACH 5-YEARS-OLD STUDENTS TO COOK RICE?

Dear PQI6004,
Time really flew fast and it’s already the 5th week that I learn the curriculum subject. This week, Dr. is not available for class, so she has uploaded some assignments on spectrum and we need to answer the questions within the day.

The assignment involves the ADDIE model, specifically, the Analysis phase. Dr. Dorothy has provided us with a video where the friend has to teach his friend how to make a simple pepperoni pizza.
The question of the assignment is;
Write down the things you need to consider when preparing a lesson to teach how to cook rice for a class of preschool students (5 years old). Write your goal analysis, and your instructional analysis on what you need to teach.

After watching the provided video several times, I came to understand on how to answer the question. Thank you Dr. for the video. It really helpful.
Firstly. I list out the things that I need to consider before planning the lesson, which are;

Hereby, I share my answer with you guys. Hope it will help anyone who are learning curriculum
subject.

1. ACKNOWLEDGE STUDENTS’ BACKGROUND

Firstly, I need to acknowledge the students background. I have to know whether their parents cooked rice using the rice cooker or cooking rice in traditional way, in a pot. I can collects data from students several weeks before the lessons. I can asked them verbally and have them to vote whether their parents usually cooked rice using rice cooker or pot. In addition, I can also asked them what kind of rice their family used at home, either white rice, brown rice or 5-grains rice. Since they would not know them, I can have them to ask their parents and let me know later. Next, I also can asked my students whether they have experience in helping their parents cooked rice or they have experience in cooking rice. This is important so that, my lessons can be applicable in their daily
lives.

2. TOOLS AND MATERIALS PREPARATION

Next, after I have known their family situations and background, I can decide what are the tools and materials that I need to prepare. Based on the majority voting that I get prior the lessons, I can chose what kind of rice I need to buy and teach them. Additionally, I also can prepare either rice cooker or pot after consulting with them. Considering my students are preschools students, I have to prepare tools that are children-friendly and the rice that I bring should not be too large to avoid any accidents.

3. IDENTIFY STUDENTS’ ABILITY AND DISABILITY (PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY)
After gathering my student information, I need to identify their abilities and disabilities, physically and mentally. I have to imagine whether these 5-years-old students know how to measure the rice, how to clean the rice and next, how to use the rice cooker. As they are still small children, I should prepare for the worse which is to imagine that the students cannot cook rice on their own. Thus, I also have to come up with emergency plan, in case some emergency occurrence happen.

4.  IDENTIFY PRECAUTION STEPS FOR THE STUDENTS
In addition, I also have to think of precaution steps that I need to teach the students. In this case, I have to tell them to dry the rice cooker pot before inserting the pot in the rice cooker to avoid malfunction of the rice cooker or explosion. I have to warn them to not hold the rice cooker while the rice is cooking, as the rice cooker will be incredibly hot at that point.

5.  HOW TO EVALUATE THE STUDENTS COOKING RICE
      After demonstrating on how to cook rice, I have to come up with a way to observe them in an organised way. I have to make sure every students know and have experience on how to cook rice at the end of the lesson

Next, GOAL ANALYSIS can be created. Goal analysis should be much broader than objective of the lesson. My goal analysis for this assignment is:

My goal analysis is to teach a class of preschool students aged 5 years old, on how to cook plain rice properly and safely using rice cooker.

After considering all the above, INSTRUCTIONAL ANALYSIS can be constructed. Instructional analysis is more to the steps that teacher want to follow while conducting the lesson.

My instructional analysis is generally constructed as shown above and this is my complete answer:

      1. Tools preparation
I have to introduce them all the tools and materials to cook rice. For instance, the rice cooker, rice cooker pot, measurement cup, rice and adequate amount of water.

2. Measuring the rice
Then I have to teach them how to measure the rice. I have to let them know the ratio of rice to be put to the ratio of the water need to be place (1: 1 ½).

3. Cleaning the rice
Next, I will teach them how to clean the rice and how to ensure that the rice has been cleaned. I will recommend them to clean the rice three times, and ensure that there are no foreign materials such as ticks and dust.

4. Cooking the rice using rice cooker
Additionally, I will teach the students how to operate the rice cooker. I will show them how to plug the rice cooker to the electric socket and to turn on the rice cooker. I have to tell them the precautions on using the rice cooker, such as before placing the rice pot, the rice pot need to be dried to avoid electrocution. Then I will teach them to turn on the button to cook the rice and observe the changes of the rice cooker when the rice is cooking, such as the steam production.

5. Ensuring that the rice has been cooked properly
I will let them know how to know that the rice has been cooked (the ‘tick’ sound from the rice cooker). Next, I will teach them how to measure whether the rice has been cooked properly (based on the softness of the rice).

In addition, the second section, the situation of the learning is different. The question is as shown below;
Next, imagine you have to teach a class of adult students, say a group of students from Denmark, who have no experience in cooking rice nor do they have a rice cooker. What needs to change in your instructional analysis?

Next, I will share with you my answer for this question.

What would I change in the instructional analysis for the Denmark adults students, is that I will teach them how to cook the rice on the stove using a pot. Next, I will introduce them the rice cooker and teach them how to cook rice using the rice cooker. This is because, perhaps after my introduction on the rice cooker, they will purchase a rice cooker and use it to cook rice. In addition, I will advice them on the benefits of purchasing and using the rice cooker. (Even though the purchase of rice cooker could cost a lot, but it can be used for a long time and can save time and ease the way of cooking rice.

After answering this assignment, it seems that I have understand more on the Analyze phase of the A.D.D.I.E. model. This assignment surely helps a lot. Thankyou Dr.
Well, that’s all from me. Thankyou.
